Haze 02:36 video
I’m a big ol’ bowl of gelatin I’m mellow in a marsh And I try not to turn to jelly Then my thoughts fall apart I’m a bucket of haze I’m asleep in a daze Of a fruitless, terrible, hungry phase But I haven’t in days I sold my soul, my bed right I made all my dreams out of sight I moved my best self to the bright I’m a lantern, stuck in a haze I’m nothing but salt I’m a pillar of fault Thumbing through the hyperbeam of the gestalt But it’s stuck in my brain All the fires froze All the deep wells rose I’m a big bull taking a doze Dreaming Static and gray I sold my soul, my bed right I made all my dreams out of sight I moved my best self to the bright I’m a lantern, stuck in a haze I sold my soul, my bed right I made all my dreams out of sight I moved my best self to the bright I’m a mountain, stuck in phase

Remnant 04:14
Year of the remnant Well meaning sediments A scorched hearth Shovels over turf Seers to the sound Listen in, I’m listening Listen in, I’m listening I’ve been dreaming in Colors, that I have never seen I’ve been seeing selves That I, have never been Year of the remnant Unruly tenants A stone unturned Every table churned Speakers to the ground Listen in, I’m listening Listen in, I’m listening I’ve been dreaming in Colors, that I have never seen I’ve been seeing selves That I, have never been Seers to the sound Listen in, I’m listening Speakers to the ground Listen in, I’m listening Listen in, I’m listening

Would someone tell me please the mechanism For getting by Remaining other-centered Without being left to dry Some kind of way To excise the doubt Some crucial detail I can’t live without Where do cities go when they die? On what number do the mountains call? And miss me with those forest trees, and I See the ocean in the seas, and no- -body is waving at me, and Oh, I really just can’t seem to be Overpass graffiti concrete reads: “Is nothing, and also not” Feel the resonant vibrations all neat and tidily taught And the tides spell out An outline that speaks And breaks, confounds, and draws a map for those that seek Where do cities go when they die? On what number do the mountains call? And miss me with those forest trees, and I See the ocean in the seas, and no- -body is waving at me, and Oh, I really just can’t seem to be My brain’s been getting fried I’ve been spelling “raze” with a “Z” That fire inside it burns But it doesn’t seem to feed Maybe the only way to get by Without rolling in curses Is to abandon all but one Of the boundless universes Where do cities go when they die? On what number do the mountains call? And miss me with those forest trees, and I See the ocean in the seas, and no- -body is waving at me, and Oh, I really just can’t seem to be

I’m finding solace In the rapids endless charging I’m gleaning lessons from a branch strong arming the wind I’m paying utmost attention To the rays busting down my closed eyelids I’m finding peace wherever I go ‘Cause it ain’t where it used to be no more And if you stare long enough The world’s just like the sun I’ve been dreaming Of astral projecting And looking back down From the rivers of dust And the titans of sound I’m finding peace wherever I go ‘Cause it ain’t where it used to be no more And if you stare long enough The world’s just like the sun The skyline sings In a language I can’t read Oh they say it’s out of key But it sounds right to me It breaks me down just a little The whole world playing The World’s Largest Fiddle And there’s an angel of a virtue That we hadn’t thought to name And she’s hanging up above And she’s hanging head in shame The skyline sings In a language I can’t read Oh they say it’s out of key But it sounds right to me

Well I’m living each day Like it’s my 100th to last And I’m closing my fingers So the sand it cannot pass Oh the days slip by regardless if I want them to or not Time only moves at a speed That’s faster than I thought So if my mind is the flame Then my days they are the flicker I went down to the river But it moved so much quicker And if my mind is the flame Then my days they are the flicker I went down to the river But it moved so much quicker You feel it in your bones A pulsing current against the stones A feeling you could never place But that you have always known If you find yourself as driftwood Try and understand No matter where you’re headed You’ll always find the land Well I’m cutting myself some slack For not holding on to the days that passed Each perspective is a passing phase They mount ‘till I get old But I’ll grow ‘till I die Lest I die young and could So tell me why telling time is like pulling teeth And why the days fly at me like a sword out the sheath So if my mind is the flame Then my days they are the flicker I went down to the river But it moved so much quicker You feel it in your bones A pulsing current against the stones A feeling you could never place But that you have always known If you find yourself as driftwood You’ve got to understand No matter where you’re headed You’ll always find the land I went down to the river But it moved so much quicker I went down to the river But it moved so much quick Still waiting for that day that doesn’t make me want some liquor

Daunted 04:29
I’ve been losing In the summertime The sun it rages Pulling out last night’s vines Through a sheen gleaming And a call for some shade Amidst some unkept promise To account for today Secret to my success? Well I’ve never been daunted Declared as another round heads down To tie on tight One more night Of fighting a sun that also rises And stretches out From her cosmic highness So I’m gonna take it or leave it My eyes, pressed up to the screen And I’m gonna take it and leave it Like I’m, living in a dream And I’m gonna take it or leave it My eyes, pressed up to the screen And I’m, gonna take it and leave it Like I’m, living in a dream Remember those halcyon days When the evenings shook Contemplating the heat death of the universe Like a happy kid should Now I’m drinking in the sun And soaking the shine There ain’t a bird in the sky But I’m pretty sure that there is one nearby Singing softly To his little bird friends On how the light Flutters and bends
So I’m gonna take it or leave it My eyes, pressed up to the screen And I’m gonna take it and leave it Like I’m, living in a dream And I’m gonna take it or leave it My eyes, pressed up to the screen And I’m, gonna take it and leave it Like I’m, living in a dream

Chills 03:32
Now here’s a story you wouldn’t believe But it’s funny and it’s true and it’s beautiful And I can’t remember how it goes Was something missing that should have fulfilled? Why do these mountains scan as hills? Why does the sun keep giving me chills? Work hard, play hard, light yourself on fire Buckle, settle down Try not to expire Like all the best advice it’s simple but it’s hard Just do good And keep doing it Was something missing that should have fulfilled? Why do these mountains scan as hills? Why does the sun keep giving me chills? Light comes bursting in Filtered through a prism And I’m tying up both hands To bundle the optimism And yeah I know it’s the only energy that’s gaining But it gets so hard And I guess that means I’m fading Tell me why I don’t go around Feeling love for every thing and one I wanna be that wavering band of light Illuminating every body And waving to the sun Was something missing that should have fulfilled? Why do these mountains scan as hills? Why does the sun keep giving me chills? Now here’s a story you wouldn’t believe But it’s funny and it’s true and it’s beautiful And I can’t remember how it goes

De-Vision 03:45
Veni vidi viscous liquid Dripping from the fountain vicious Do you wanna Piranha fodder You’re no good I know you’re gonna Maybe the algae will save us Data centers erase us Praying to the algorithms To un-do this deep de-vision We were singing to the sound But how could we have known It went straight to a server farm in North Des Moines Long remember the death of songs that we forgot to mourn Long remember the death of songs that we forgot to mourn Dying a slow death In a hotel lobby Trying vainly to think on something fondly In my head there’s four walls huddled tight In a meadow hiding from a gentle light In the back there’s a stage I can see the picture Microphone waiting, dripping cosmic scripture The tubes all humming, crowd comes running Sweating, swaying, scuffing shoes Drinking deeply the communion Searching for something true We were singing to the sound But how could we have known It went straight to a server farm in North Des Moines Long remember the death of songs that we forgot to mourn Long remember the death of songs that we forgot to mourn Complicated and serene I’m breathing deep Layers pile and topple, remain unseen Practicing fully a simple act of being We’ll invent the constellations And watch them gleam We’ll remember every song that we have ever known Singing to the sound and buzzing in the light that’s shown We’ll remember every song that we have ever known Singing to the sound and buzzing in the light that’s shown We’ll remember every song that we have ever known Singing to the sound and buzzing in the light that’s shown

Pond 03:05
I’m a rogue wave in a coy pond How the hell are you? I’m bottled lightning brimming Burning up the fuse I’m simmering and seeing red And bleeding in all blues I’m a rogue wave in a coy pond How the hell are you? I’m busting up my head But I feel brand new It’s the forest from the trees falling For all to see It’s the physical manifestation Of that which you don’t believe It’s the perpetual fixing Of the consistently broke It’s the gradual unveiling Of the omnipotents hoax I’m a rogue wave in a coy pond How the hell are you? I’m bottled lightning brimming Burning up the fuse I’m simmering and seeing red And bleeding in all blues I’m a rogue wave in a coy pond How the hell are you? I’m jumping out my head And I feel brand new Well I’m feeling pretty zen Lose my head now and then I’m a bird out in the light I’m view that’s out of sight Of my fading half-hearted better angels Singing freely in a ragged restless choir But I feel brand new I’m a rogue wave in a coy pond How the hell are you? I’m bottled lightning brimming Burning up the fuse I’m simmering and seeing red And bleeding in all blues I’m a rogue wave in a coy pond How the hell are you?

Loneliness is simple Happiness is hard Let the sun set on whoever you think you are Being a part of And being your own Are just two sides Of the same shining coin It’s a river flowing not a jerking set of frames It’s that big old soul that we all share It’s a river flowing not a jerking set of frames It’s that big old soul that we all share And take part in its days Well I may not be that guiding light But I’ll be that little molecule Doing my part To set afire The radiance we use Loneliness is simple Happiness is hard Let the sun set on whoever you think you are Being a part of And being your own Are just two sides Of the same shining coin It’s a river flowing not a jerking set of frames It’s that big old soul that we all share It’s a river flowing not a jerking set of frames It’s that big old soul that we all share And take part in its days
Well I may not be that guiding light But I’ll be that little molecule Doing my part To set afire The radiance we use Well I may not be that guiding light But I’ll be that little molecule Doing my part To set afire The radiance we use Well I may not be that guiding light But I’ll be that little molecule Doing my part To set afire The radiance we use

about

"We all feel it, that not-so-new-anymore sense that our days are slipping through our closed fingers, spiraling toward a chaos, a void, a churning maelstrom.  There are those who give themselves up to the natural tides and accept the destruction as it happens, and then there are those who care enough to swim against their fear, anger, and confusion toward something that may only exist in their heads… an eternal truth, a universal beauty.  A flicker of light amidst the swirling horror, an order in the disorderly, a hope that we might find peace for us all.

Those of you who reward yourselves with a physical copy of Big Fundamental’s second album Hyperbeam will find your heart smiling from a very deep place when you open it all up and find the band’s kaleidoscopic lyric sheet within.  Starting from the very outer edges of the cosmos and the page, you can spiral inward alongside every unleashing of doubt and hope, under the graffiti laden overpasses, past the rivers of dust and the angel that still hangs her head in shame, past the meadows of light, and server farms, and graveyards of songs, and crowds of people contemplating the heat death of the universe, still searching for something true. By the end you will understand you are holding a hand drawn map for those that seek, through the endless haze of uncertainty, through the deranged remnants of a society that once was and still is, in an incessant geometric march toward what must be there, a center that can hold us all, together.

Like our lives turning from calm to chaos, this record unloads in torrents of elemental fury.  And as on any journey, there are times we return to find ourselves centered and hopeful that we can do good and do our part. It is a natural turning of the page.  So let the rhythms unwind in the windfall of guitars and circling melodies, let the words rise against you like a rapids endless charging, and you will find peace in the twists and turns, through the barren landscapes and the beautiful mountains and the cosmos swirling above.  In the divine order and the human disorder, there is an inscrutable beauty in it all…

The skyline sings
in a language I can’t read,
oh they say it’s out of key
but it sounds right to me"
